CELLULAR JAIL

Constructed by British in 1906 at Port Blair, stands mute witness to the atrocities meted out to the freedom fighters, incarcerated in the jail. The name ‘Cellular Jail’ was given as this jail is made up of individual cells for solitary confinement of the prisoners. Originally it had 698 cells with 7 wings fanning out from a central hub.

ROSS ISLAND

Small and beautiful island less than a sq. km in area had been the seat of British power and Capital of these islands from 1858 till 1941. When Japanese occupied the islands, Ross was converted to a PoW site. The ruins of the church, the Chief Commissioner’s bungalow among overcrowding vines and aerial roots are the last remains of the colonial forces.

Situated on the north of Port Blair, is suited for snorkeling, viewing underwater corals, marine life through specially designed glass bottom boats.

CARBYN’S COVE BEACH

The coconut palm fringed beach is ideal for sun basking. Historical remains of the Japanese bunkers can be seen on the way.

Apart from regular science exhibits, Science Center has an ‘Andaman & Nicobar Islands Gallery ‘with interactive exhibits depicting genesis of the Islands, volcanic activities, science of oceans, etc.

Viper-Islands
VIPER ISLANDS

The Islands derives its name from vessel ‘Viper’ in which Lt. Archibald Blair came to the islands in 1768 with the purpose of establishing a Penal Settlement. The vessel, believed to have met with an accident and its wreckage was abandoned near the islands. Gallows built atop a hillock, visible to all prisioners in the islands signified death.

Wandoor is at a distance of 29 Kms. from Port Blair. On the way is Agriculture Farm, Humphrey Gunj Martyrs Memorial, Rubber Plantation. This Marine Park, comprising open sea, creeks and 15 small and large islands, is one of the best found anywhere in the world. One can visit the islands of Jolly buoy and Red skin by boat, viewing rare corals and underwater marine life through glass bottom boats on the way.
